This work from 2014 shows two shimmering fish – one in deep, almost mystical blue and one in delicate gold. They glide side by side through a dreamy realm of water filled with light and movement.

In many works by Ri Meuser von Eschmar, the fish appears as a recurring symbol – standing for purity, bliss and immortality in the early Christian sense. Here the two fish are both opponents and companions: the golden fish as a symbol of light, the blue one as an image of depth and mystery.

Thanks to her unique mono-sgraffito technique, the picture unfolds an extraordinary luminosity and transparency. Layer by layer, the artist applied pigments, scraped them away and layered them anew. The result is a living surface that gives the fish an almost sculptural structure and a shimmering lightness at the same time.
